The most rewarding part of NBA 2K is at the MyCareer path, and the exact same is true for this year's game. You create a player, spec them out for a position, and construct them further by focusing in some basketball skills and stats. For example, I built my guy for a point guard that will thread the needle when dishing assists, but one who can also easily finish with driving layups or midsize jumpers.
Once you've settled in your own template and stat abilities, you go through a brand new yet familiar story of becoming a young, forthcoming player leading into the NBA draft. Notable celebrities like Michael K. Williams, Djimon Hounsou, and Jesse Williams play characters on your cinematic-style narrative and deliver powerful performances. However, while some dramatic or critical moments draw you in for only a beat, it does not really add up to much or sensibly connect on a front. There is a pleasant romantic subplot, petty player play, a thread about your dad who seemingly passed away but shows up in flashbacks (he is played by Jesse Williams and doesn't look a day older than your own player, so which was confusing), along with a somewhat shady family friend who can become your broker. Truly, it is fancy set-dressing to usher you in the entire roster of MyCareer actions.
Au revoir, merci.
